Kangaroo Reproductive Managementkangaroos on golf course

by Pitchare Oceania
During this week the Ecological Services Unit of Wildlife Warriors and Endeavor Veterinary Ecology will be conducting kangaroo reproductive management operations on the Pines and the Palms golf courses.

This will ensure that the kangaroo population that lives in Sanctuary Cove remains at sustainable levels. Around 44 female kangaroos will be darted and a hormone implant will be inserted under their skin.

This implant will suppress reproduction in the female kangaroos for 3 – 5 years. Kangaroos recovering from the effects of the sedative may be uncoordinated and easily frightened so please stay well away from any kangaroo that appears to be recovering from anasthaesia. Sanctuary Cove wildlife officer Wendy Nelson will be assisting the Unit while they are on site.

Health Article by Dr JBobesity

A recent study published in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine has looked at the health burden of increasing obesity rates in the US across a range of locations and socio-economic groups.

It is not news that obesity rates have been climbing steadily over the past few decades. Ongoing studies such as the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System, have shown that the US prevalence of obesity climbed from 14.1 percent of the population in 1993, to 26.7 percent in 2008 – an 89.9 percent increase. What is not so well understood is what this means in terms of impacts on life expectancy and, even more relevant to those of us who want to live long and healthy, quality of life. These quality of life measures are directly related to the cost, both social and fiscal, of obesity rates – the overall “health burden”.

Using a measure called “Quality of Life Years” (QALYs) the authors showed that the health burden of these increased obesity rates has more than doubled in the same period and in some subsets of the population this figure is higher still. QALYs measure the number of years lost to early mortality and the number of healthy years lost due to morbidity (non-fatal disease) as a consequence of obesity.

To quote from the excellent commentary article by Caroline Scott-Thomas: “Obesity was most predictive of death by cardiovascular disease, the authors wrote, but this association was greater for men. For women, there was a weaker relationship between obesity and deaths from all causes, but they added that there is generally a stronger association between obesity in women and morbidity than there is for men.

Dr JB’s Comment:

It is pleasing to see that epidemiologists are looking at quality of life issues not just the “life and death” numbers. One of the great fallacies of modern medicine is that increased life expectancy, which the medical profession points to as evidence that they are doing the right thing, somehow equates to long, healthy, happy lives. It’s true we can keep people alive longer with modern medical interventions such as drugs and surgery but many would argue that lives extended in these ways are only fractionally worth living.

Hopefully these kinds of studies will help governments and committed individuals understand something that our grandparents have been saying for a very long time: “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure”. Prevention in the form of regular exercise, an excellent diet, adequate rest and plenty of water.

Riviera Sell 19 New Boats at Sydney Boat ShowRiviera Boats flag

by BYM Product and Industry News

Australia’s most awarded pleasure boat builder Riviera, has achieved an amazing result at the Sydney International Boat Show selling 19 new boats over the five days of the show and its subsequent sea trial days immediately following the show and winning an award for Display Excellence at the marina.

Riviera’s new boat sales were across the flybridge, sport yacht and offshore express ranges and included multiple sales of the 47 Enclosed Flybridge, 5000 and 5800 Sport Yachts with a total value of AUD $26, 246, 000.

The incredible popularity of the new 43 Open Flybridge continues with four sales achieved at the Sydney International Boat Show. Since its launch in late May several international orders have also been received. Riviera now holds orders for 16 of these exciting new models.

The announcement of the new 53 Enclosed Flybridge was extremely well received on day one of the boat show. This new model retains the distinctive Riviera styling but incorporates a new generation of technology and comfort. The 53 combines contemporary thinking with traditional Riviera elements. There is a lot of boat for its length and a great many key design features including an enclosed flybridge, internal staircase, full beam master cabin, a total of three cabins, two bathrooms aft galley and the flexibility of choice with a range of different pod drive and engine plant configurations. This new model has been entirely designed around these proven and efficient drives and is due for release in March 2011.

Riviera CEO John Anderson said these results showed the market was falling in love with Riviera’s new designs and new thinking.

“This result supports our belief that superior design, technology and world class quality are the hallmarks of Riviera and these virtues have allowed us to emerge from the global financial crisis in a very convincing manner,” Mr Anderson said.

“To have sold 40 new boats over the past eight weeks between the Sanctuary Cove and Sydney shows is a tremendous result for the Riviera brand, our loyal owners and our dedicated staff.”

Riviera’s brand and communications manager Stephen Milne said the sales results were a direct reflection of the factory teams working in partnership with Riviera’s dealers.

“It was a tremendous team effort showcasing Riviera at its best at SIBS,” Mr Milne said.

Better Life – Meditation Meditation
Meditation is a simple time-proven method to improve and enrich our lives. The first and most important thing to understand about meditation is how ‘normal’ it is and that the difference between self-suggestions made during meditation and those made while we are in a waking state is only one of degree. Here’s a simple way to help you to rapidly and effectively enter into a meditative state.
Deep meditation consists of two parts. The first part involves inducing a meditative state; and the second part is to simply concentration on a suggestion that your non-conscious mind will accept without resistance. Over time, the suggestion will begin to manifest itself in your life. A meditative state differs from our normal waking state in a number of physiological ways. The most significant of these is our attention. In the normal waking state, we take in many things and can be aware of hundreds of different stimuli all at the same time; in a meditative state, all of our attention is focussed on one issue.
In the waking state our awareness is broad, flat and all encompassing; in the meditative state our awareness is focussed, heightened and more intense. This intensified awareness is what causes our non-conscious mind to be receptive to suggestion. There is no best way to meditate there are many different ways. One effective method is to fill the senses with your own observations, then narrow those observations down one by one until your attention is focussed and you enter into a meditative state.
Here is one way to do that. First place yourself in a comfortable position in a dimly lit room. Ensure you won’t be interrupted. Remove your shoes, wear loose clothes and make sure you’re warm. Sit with your hands apart, resting them comfortably on your lap. Focus on one item or object in the room. Perhaps a mark or spot on the wall, or maybe you could focus on a reflection or a highlight or an object. Whatever you choose fix your attention and continue to focus on that object throughout the meditation.
Now, using only your peripheral vision and without letting your eyes move from the visual highlight you have chosen, note six different things you can observe in the room. Take a single slow but normal breath with each object you name. Say to yourself quietly in your mind: I can see the light switch; slow breathe. I can see the corner of the chair; slow breathe. I can see the lights; slow breathe. I can see the painting; slow breathe. I can see the floor; slow breathe. I can see my hands on my knees; slow breathe.
Now, without allowing your eyes to stray from that spot, note six different sounds you can hear. I can hear my heart beating; slow breathe. I can hear the sound of my own breathing; slow breathe. I can hear the quiet sounds of the house; slow breathe. I can hear a vehicle passing; slow breathe. I can hear a noise from the garden; slow breathe.
Then, once again, without letting your eyes stray from the spot, note six different things you can feel. I can feel the floor under my feet; slow breathe. I can feel the chair against the back of my legs; slow breathe. I can feel the belt around my waist; slow breathe. I can feel my back resting against the chair; slow breathe. I can feel a draught moving through the room; slow breathe. I can feel my elbows resting against my body; slow breathe.
Now simply repeat this process, but this time with five, then four, then three, then two things you can see, hear and feel. All the while ensuring you stay focused, and taking a slow normal breath with each count. Note how your point of focus may seem to move and shift, this simply indicates a developing and deepening meditative state. As you approach the count of…one, you may find your eyes becoming tired and feel the need to allow them to close.
The objective of this meditation method is to convey your goal or vision to your non-conscious mind in two steps. The first step is to say the following statement: More and more, I am relaxing into a state of great peace and calm. I am feeling content, and at ease with the world. I radiate peace and calm to all I come in contact with and they feel at ease with me. The second step is to focus on your goal or vision which you have committed to memory or written out prior. When you focus on your goal or vision your non-conscious mind will take care of the rest. Alternatively you can record your goal or vision and play it during this time.
